Graphic design: an important part of a digital marketer’s toolbox.

As a lifelong student, the learning never stops — especially in an industry that’s changing every minute.

While it definitely is a challenge to be a master at everything, it helps to be aware of all the skills that may be required of a digital marketer, why it’s important, and how to do it.

To be honest, despite my many art projects in elementary school, I never really felt confident in my ability to be creative.

It turns out that I just needed to explore it more and find another way to discover my potential.

Canva is a visual platform that gives me the ability to unleash my inner graphic designer (and it’s great for you too).

Here are my reasons as to why Canva is one of my favorite tools and why you should be familiar with it if you’re a growing digital marketing specialist:

It’s not that hard to learn.

Whether you’re new to graphic design and are teaching yourself the ropes (just like I’m doing) or a seasoned pro, Canva is quite easy to use. Although it takes some time to learn, it’s very user friendly and quite easy to create different designs.

Inspiration is everywhere.

Canva also has templates for every format and occasion. Posting on social media for Thanksgiving? Creating a shirt for fun? Drafting a flyer to share online or print? There are ideas for everything, and you can create your own brand kit/template as well.

Resources abound.

Definitely check out their Learn section where you can follow their blog and Design School for tips. If you’d like to learn more, there’s also a lot of informative YouTube videos and articles. This video by Aurelius Tjin on YouTube was very helpful in teaching me the basics.

Work with your team.

You can create a team with whom you can share all your designs with.

Integrate with other apps.

I have yet to use it but I can imagine it’s super useful. I saw that you can easily connect with your social media accounts, even Slack and email marketing like MailChimp.

Use easily on mobile or on your PC.

Although I’m sure a lot of other softwares provide this same benefit nowadays, this is still really useful when you’re on the go and want to continue the work on your PC (or vice versa).

And lastly, my favorite: it’s free.

Well, for the most part. Canva has multiple plans and I do just fine using their free plan. But for more added features, they also have a paid Canva Pro plan. It really depends how you need to use it.

(Sidenote: One thing I did notice is that if you start a project under a certain dimension you have to have Canva Pro to easily convert to another size/format.)

Having the creative eye for design takes a lot of practice. That’s something that I’m always working on — and knowing how to use the right software correctly (whether it be Canva or something else) is a great big first step.

Take time going through it so you can understand all the features that are available. As you grow your skills, make sure to use every chance to practice. You can do it!

As your favorite budding digital marketing specialist I’m always talking about my experiences (and more) on my YouTube channel. Check it out to follow my journey or my other articles here on Medium!
