My First Instagram Takeover (And Why You Should Do It, Too)
Fall in love with the process of introducing yourself and meeting new people.
Introductions — it’s all about making that first impression.
I’ll admit I do get nervous when it comes to meeting new people, as I’m sure I’m not the only one.
So when I was given the opportunity to do my first “Instagram Takeover”, I couldn’t help but feel anxious.
An Instagram takeover is when you introduce yourself on another instagram account (usually through Stories) — for a short period of time.
While I do have my own Instagram that I post regularly on, I still found myself nervous to be on another platform.
I‘m actually quite camera shy, and it was my first time meeting the community.
But sometimes you just have to hit the ground running.
After my recent experience with being a part of an Instagram takeover I wanted to share my own tips and recommendations so that you won’t be as timid as me:
1. Be Yourself
How can you show your own personality?
There’s no need to be shy. You want people to know you for who you are. Just be yourself and, depending on where you’re doing your takeover, make sure to be professional.
2. Make it short, but sweet
You want to respect the time of those who are watching. Pay attention to how long you’re making your introduction. You want to make it short, but not too short. And not too long, either.
How can you get your message across efficiently?
3. Craft your intro around the value you bring to the community
Think about why you are on this takeover.
You want to brighten up everyone’s day, show them your everyday life, and/or introduce them to a new product they might find helpful?
Is it because you’re joining a new team or starting a new project?
Make sure to craft your intro around the value you bring to the certain community.
4. Don’t forget to show your face.
It’s all about being SOCIAL on social media.
While everyone has their own levels of comfortability, the purpose of your Instagram takeover is to connect.
Make sure to show your face so they know who you are!
Everything takes practice and experience. Don’t be afraid to give it a try.
The more you put yourself out there the more comfortable you’ll be!
